Perfectly imperfect. 🤍

I found this tiny shell on the beach today.

Not perfect.
Not whole.
Damaged, technically.

And yet somehow, in exactly the place where it had broken, there was a heart.

It made me think about how much of life we spend trying to smooth out the cracks.

Trying to become less messy.
Less sensitive.
Less complicated.
More healed.
More together.
More like the version of ourselves we think we should be.

But perhaps wholeness isn’t the absence of cracks.

Perhaps sometimes the most beautiful parts of us exist because life has left its mark.

The experiences that changed us.
The things that didn’t go to plan.
The chapters we wouldn’t have chosen.
The edges that are a little rougher than they once were.

They don’t necessarily make us less.

Sometimes, they create an opening.

For softness.
For perspective.
For connection.
For something entirely new to shine through.

You don’t have to wait until you’re perfectly healed, perfectly regulated or perfectly put back together to be worthy of a beautiful life.

You’re allowed to be a work in progress and something extraordinary at exactly the same time.

Perfectly imperfect.

And perhaps that was always the point. 🤍

Anger and irritability get a bad rep but I think few emotions are as valuable in understanding the emotional and psychological landscape someone is navigating internally.

Anger, in all its guises, is so often protective. It’s designed to help you survive. We shy away from it as something ugly or fearful but it’s immensely useful information: that a boundary is crossed, that we feel under threat, that there is simply too much demand to cope.

I wonder where we might land when we treat our irritable selves with kindness rather than shame, repression and judgement….

The goal isn’t to become a person who never gets stressed, angry, anxious or overwhelmed.

That person doesn’t exist.

Regulation is noticing:

“I’m activated.”

And gradually developing enough awareness and tools to help yourself return.

Sometimes that takes 30 seconds.

Sometimes it takes an afternoon.

Sometimes the most regulated response available is simply recognising that today is hard and reducing what you expect from yourself.

We’re not trying to eliminate our nervous system responses.

We’re learning not to be completely governed by them.

The heat doesn’t just affect your body.

It affects your emotional capacity too.

When temperatures rise, your body works constantly behind the scenes to cool itself, regulate your heart rate and maintain hydration. That takes energy—energy that would usually be available for patience, focus and emotional regulation.

Sometimes I’m reminded of Kintsugi when I look at the people putting in the incredible work to rebuild, reframe and repair parts of themselves that have felt…broken.

Kintsugi is a Japanese practice of repairing a broken object with gold; Instead of hiding the cracks or discarding the broken object, Kintsugi treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise. It is deeply rooted in two Japanese philosophical concepts:

Wabi-sabi: The acceptance of transience and imperfection.

Mushin: The acceptance of change and non-attachment.

The result is a both beautiful and also shows such deep honour for the retained value of piecing something back together, even when it seemed lost.

And after the repair? The object is more precious. More valuable. More beautiful.

It’s worth thinking about….

Being needed feels good.

It gives us purpose.
Value.
A sense that we matter.

But sometimes, without noticing, being needed becomes who we are.

We become the person who always says yes.

The person who carries the emotional load.

The person who keeps everything moving.

And somewhere along the way, our own needs begin to feel inconvenient.

Rest feels selfish.

Boundaries feel uncomfortable.

Asking for support feels impossible.

Not because we’re weak.

Because we’ve become so practised at looking after everyone else that we’ve forgotten how to look after ourselves.

Many people don’t burn out because they aren’t capable.

They burn out because they’ve spent so long carrying responsibility that they’ve lost sight of the person carrying it.

Sometimes healing isn’t about becoming somebody new.

It’s about remembering who you were before everyone needed something from you.

People often think nervous system regulation looks like huge great big moments- like a yoga retreat or a week off on holiday but the truth is the brain relies so deeply on small moments consistently showing that it is safe instead.

Here is a micro regulation exercise sent from my ‘outdoor office’ today that I absolutely love because not only is it quick, not only is it grounding, but people can also do this in almost any moment- without anyone else noticing.

🍁 Take a moment to go outside take a deep breath in, with a longer exhale
🍁drop your shoulders
🍁 slowly draw your attention to the world around you
🍁 try to notice:
🍃 five things you can see
🍃 four things you can hear
🍃 three things you can feel
🍃 two things you can smell
🍃 one thing that you know to be true

🍁 Here take another deep breath….
exhale….

The impact this will have on your nerve system is huge if practised over time. The small moments of coming back to yourself and grounding yourself in the world around you is deeply powerful in communicating to your body that it is safe and sending a message to yourself that you are present and grounded in this moment ❤️

Most people never stop to question their definition of success.

They simply inherit it.

Carry more.

Many of the people I work with are objectively successful.

But beneath the achievements is often a quiet question:

The answer is rarely that they’re not trying hard enough. In fact, wanting to feel joy is one of the biggest drives I observe.

More often, they’ve become disconnected from the things that create genuine wellbeing.

Sometimes happiness isn’t something we need to find.

Sometimes the person who is shouting isn’t asking for conflict.
Sometimes the person who has become distant isn’t asking to be left alone.
Sometimes the anger, criticism, withdrawal, defensiveness or control is hiding something much more vulnerable:
Fear.
Hurt.
Rejection.
Loneliness.
A need to feel seen.
This doesn’t mean harmful behaviour should be tolerated.
Boundaries still matter.
Accountability still matters.
But when we can look beyond the behaviour and become curious about the unmet need underneath it, relationships often begin to change.
The people who most need love are often asking for it in the most unloving of ways.

The heaviest burdens are often the ones nobody sees.

Many people are not driven purely by ambition.
